Grandmother inspires winning essay by Oakleaf 8th grader
Norman honored during Hispanic Heritage Month by Gov. DeSantis
OAKLEAF – A Clay County eighth grader recently spent an evening at the Governor’s Mansion after her Hispanic Heritage Month essay was selected by First Lady Casey DeSantis.
Chloe Norman, 13, a student at Oakleaf Junior High, wrote about her grandmother after receiving a Hispanic Heritage Month essay assignment.
The essay was selected by the First Lady as a winner.
“It was very exciting to find out,” Norman said. “My mom came home and told me and I didn’t even believe her at first.”
Norman was then invited to the Governor’s Mansion where she was awarded a four-year Florida college tuition scholarship. She doesn’t yet have exact plans for college, but Norman said the scholarship eases a lot of worries she had about selecting a college.
Norman said winning the contest and visiting the Governor’s Mansion was unique and an experience she’ll never forget.
“(Ron) DeSantis gave a speech in front of everyone and recognized us winners by name,” Norman said.
Winning this contest was especially noteworthy for Norman because of the Hispanic leader she wrote about. Norman’s grandmother was born in Cuba where she eventually left to start a new life in America. She became an educator here and someone who is a leader and role model.
“She passed away, but I know she would’ve felt pretty great and to see it win, it would have meant the world to her,” Norman said.
Norman’s principal Kristin Rousseau said the school is thrilled to have a winner like this within its halls.
“We are thrilled and honored to have one of our own students honored by Governor and Mrs. DeSantis,” Rousseau said. “Chloe is a hardworking and respected student leader and the Oakleaf Junior High School community congratulates her.”
In a press release released following Norman and the other winners’ night at the Governor’s Mansion, Lady DeSantis said the honor was hers that night.
“Ron and I were honored to celebrate the work of some of our state’s most talented students...as we announced the winners of Florida’s Hispanic Heritage Month student contest,” DeSantis said.
