ORANGE PARK - One a senior, the other a freshman as two high schoolers exacted a bit of cold weather speed to win their races at the Florida Striders Resolution Run 5K on a bitter, windy cold morning Saturday at the Bestbet Orange Park Kennel Club.
Jacob Campbell, a senior at Fleming Island High School that just finished his final season as a top runner for the school's cross country team, won by nearly a minute and a half in the men's race with a 16 minute, 39-second effort ahead of Fleming Island High teammate Jacob Sanders who was second at 17:06. Third went to masters runner and multiple athlete dad Gary Myers, who has swimmers and runners in his family tree, who took third at age 52 in 17:41.
In the female race, 14-year-old Episcopal High freshman Stella Krueger won by just three seconds over veteran runner Michelle McCreary, 41, with an 18:54 by Krueger and an 18:57 by McCreary. Uniquely, Krueger's mom, Michelle, 49, also a masters ace herself and a statue in downtown Jacksonville, was third in 17:41.
Master's awards went to Orange Park CrossFit diva Sarah Hernandez, 43, in 21:52 in 50th overall with Jeff Wight, 47, winning the men's masters title in 17:54 in fifth overall.
In the male 80 and overs, 95-year-old August Leone was the oldest finisher with a 47:13 clip to finish fifth in the age group. Diane Payne, 80, was the oldest female competitor winning her age group in 38:23.
A couple of sister pairs highlighted the female races with sisters Eve and Emma Schlottauer, 14 and 18, going 1-2 in the 14-19 age group while two former Fleming Island High swim state champions; Emma and Sarah Grimm, were third and fourth in the 20-24 age division in 23:54 and 24:21.
The next play will be the Hellcat 5k and 10 races at Green Cove Springs' Military Museum in January as well as the always very fast Matanzas 5K in St. Augustine.
Grace Episcopal Day School will stage its annual 5K/8KJ SuperHero Runs on February 15 off Kingsley Avenue in Orange Park.
