FLEMING ISLAND – After Clay County residents reached deep in their pockets to support Special Olympics with record contributions in the last two Tip-A-Cop events, the sheriff’s office doubled down on the program’s famous fortunes. The agency with badges and guns, along with county athletes, will be serving soft drinks, tea and water, delivering loaves of bread and welcoming guests Tuesday and Wednesday at the LongHorn Steakhouse on Fleming Island to collect tips to collect money to send Special Olympic athletes to the 2025 Florida Summer Games. In the past, Tip-A-Cop was held at either LongHorn or the Texas Roadhouse Grill in Orange Park. CCSO will utilize both steakhouses in the same calendar year this year, according to Sheriff’s Office Lt. Zach Cox, the Law Enforcement Torch Run Coordinator. Residents can support the county’s Special Olympics athletes Tuesday and Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Athletes Sherilyn (left) and Brielle welcome guests to LongHorn Monday night, while Lt. Zach Cox and athlete Diana talk with Fleming Island residents Sharon and Len Sciuto about leaving an extra tip to help county athletes get to the Florida Summer Games. Lt. Zach Cox and Diana take a moment to show off some of Diana’s medals earned in 35 years of competition.
