ALTAMONTE SPRINGS – Oakleaf High senior Shaianne Looney and Ridgeview High senior James Bratt started their quest to a tennis state title with the championship tournament beginning in Altamonte Springs on Tues., April 30. The tournament officially starts May 1 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs. Bratt, a singles finalist last year, returns after a sterling senior season that portends him again reaching the Class 2A singles championships matches. Bratt advanced all the way to the final last year, but was forced to default in order to take school tests.
Note; Bratt advanced to Class 2A championship match on Wed.,May 1 with two wins on day one; one an overtime victory. Bratt repeats as a Class 2A finalist.
Looney becomes the first Oakleaf High tennis player to make the state tournament after leading the Lady Knights to a 12-2 regular season slate.
In their region team match, Oakleaf lost a 5-0 slate to Nease High School. Nease lost 4-1 to Creekside in the 3A region final with Creekside advancing to the state tournament.
Fleming Island High’s girls won their district tournament, but lost 5-0 to Lake Mary with Lake Mary defeating Buchholz 4-3 to advance to the state tournament. Fleming Island was runnerup to Buchholz in district 1-4A.
In Class 1A, St. Johns Country Day School advanced a doubles team of Stella Hyatt and Delaney Payton.
Oakleaf also advances their doubles team of Jenkins and Looney to the state tournament as district doubles champions.
