FLEMING ISLAND - Three of Clay's elementary schools were awarded a distinction last Thursday, Feb. 6.
During a presentation at the school board meeting, Swimming Pen, Oakleaf Village and Coppergate elementary schools were recognized as recipients of the Florida Department of Education's Purple Star School of Distinction Designation.
The Florida legislature established the honor in 2021 to recognize schools that support the unique needs of military families.
The schools are judged based on the resources provided for military students transitioning to new schools, the systems to help navigate their challenges and the additional activities provided for their families.
Naval Air Station Jacksonville Commanding Officer Capt. Gregory deWindt and Naval Air Station Jacksonville School Liaison Officer Teri Wanamaker presented the award to the schools.
Orange Park Elementary's Amanda Watson, Lake Asbury Junior High's Misty Massey and Bannerman Learning Center's Sierra Hardin were recognized for their wins at this year's Apple Awards.
Watson won Teacher of the Year, while Massey and Hardin took home the School-Related Employee and Rookie Teacher of the Year titles, respectively.
The meeting also was a place to acknowledge the All-State Student Performers. Nineteen students from Lake Asbury Junior, Lakeside Junior, Oakleaf Junior, Clay High, Fleming Island High, Keystone Heights Junior/Senior High, Oakleaf High, Orange Park High and Ridgeview High were selected to participate this year.
The students were chosen through a demanding statewide audition and nomination process last Fall.
