ORANGE PARK — Orange Park High teachers arrived in the school’s cafeteria on Wednesday, Sept. 17, anticipating what they thought to be a scheduled informational session, only to get a special surprise.
TaxSlayer’s Gator Bowl Charities partnered with VyStar to celebrate “Extra Yard for Teachers Week.”
Ahead of the annual TaxSlayer Gator Bowl, scheduled for Dec. 27 at EverBank Stadium, the charity celebrates the hard work of educators across the nation.
The group showed up to Orange Park High to thank its teachers. Each teacher received personalized goodie bags with handwritten notes of appreciation from VyStar employees.
Additionally, the charity partners with the College Football Playoff Foundation and FIS to host the Most Valuable Teacher Program (MVT). Kindergarten through 12th grade teachers across Northeast Florida are nominated and eligible for a $1,000 classroom grant.
The winner was John Conley, a social studies teacher and the junior varsity boys basketball coach. It was a complete shock to Conley as he went to receive his award, the crowd of teachers cheering him on as he accepted the large check.
“Thank you to the Gator Bowl for presenting me with the Most Valuable Teacher award. It is an honor to serve as a teacher at Orange Park High School. Despite the challenges, the Lord has blessed me to be in an environment where students are overcoming and succeeding.
“I am very appreciative for the opportunity to teach and encourage young people on a daily basis. Thank you again for the honor to receive this award.”
