Orange Park Mall reminisces on history, looks to future

ORANGE PARK — The Orange Park Mall rang in five decades of pride with its anniversary celebration on Wednesday.

Held in Center Court, the nostalgic morning was opened with a speech by General Manager Randy Bowman. Bowman expressed his joy in seeing the mall become a place of joy for the community.

“It's been a place where families gathered, friendships grew and memories were made," Bowman told a voluminous crowd.

Other local officials and leaders, including U.S. Rep. Aaron Bean, also gave remarks. Bean reminisced on his fun times at the mall, including the days of courting his wife and his first visit in 1977 to see "Star Wars" at the movie theater.

"Some places sell products, some places sell memories," he said. "For 50 years, Orange Park Mall has done both."

In August, Second Horizon Capital purchased the mall, expressing plans to bring thoughtful and purposeful reinvestment to the property. The firm was present at the ceremony and stated that they had some upcoming advancements that would be shared later on.

To conclude the ceremony, the Orange Park High Marching Band rendered an upbeat performance, just like they did for the mall’s grand opening. Afterwards, attendees were able to take a walk through the mall’s history while enjoying light refreshments and taking part in festive photo opportunities. There was also a ribbon-cutting in partnership with the Clay County Chamber.

The mall’s time capsule opportunity is still open. Through Sept. 30, members of the public are invited to bring photos and mementos to contribute to the capsule. It will be sealed and reopened in time for the mall’s 100th anniversary in 2075.

Items can be dropped off in the Mall Office Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
