Program’s goal is ‘filling playgrounds, not prisons’
ORANGE PARK – The Clay Police Athletic League will hit the road on a 63-mile ride on Oct. 24 to raise money for local children.
The sixth annual Sunset Ride will start and end at Adamac Harley-Davidson of Orange Park, and it will include a police-escorted ride to Green Cove Springs and back. Riders also will enjoy live music, a T-shirt and dinner, as well as a live auction or 50/50 raffle.
“All of the money goes into the program and to the kids,” said Clay County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Robert Russell.
The Police Athletic League of Clay County is a youth activities program operated by members of the Clay County Sheriff's Office and by dozens of volunteers. It is a Florida Not-for-Profit Corporation, and rely on fundraising efforts of volunteers and families, as well as support from the local community to continue providing programs to the youth of Clay County.
According to PAL, the program has SS basic goals:
• Preventing juvenile crime and drug use.
• Providing positive role models for youth.
• Developing discipline, self-esteem and positive moral values through wholesome competition.
• Improving communication and relationships between law enforcement officers and the youth of our community.
PAL programs include: baseball, softball, tackle football, cheerleading, flag football, summer basketball and Sheriff’s Office Explorers.
Riders can register at the dealership at 1520 Wells Road in Orange Park from 3-4:30 p.m. on the day of the ride. Kickstands will go up at 5 p.m. to start the 90-minute journey.
The cost is $25 a rider and $15 a passenger. A VIP package is available for $100.
Bluesdog 66 will play after the ride, and dinner will be provided by Mission BBQ.
