GREEN COVE SPRINGS – The fourth floor of the Clay County Courthouse is adorned with colorful quilts provided by the First Coast Quilters Guild as part of the Art in the Courthouse Exhibit.
The gallery walls will be covered with a fantastic display called “Quilts from the Archives,” a selection of different styles and quilt techniques that will remain on display through April. All displayed art can be viewed when the courthouse is open.
Guild members submitted quilts that represent the following techniques:
• Traditionally pieced
• Appliqued
• Foundation Paper Pieced
• Curved Piecing
• Hand ribbon work - hand embroidered flowers with silk ribbon and embroidery thread
• Variations on “Crazy” quilts
• Art quilts - *note the Faberge egg quilt (combination of crazy quilting and art quilting; it is a representation of the Faberge egg presented to a tsarina on the birth of her son by her husband, the tsar.
• Trash bag quilting; the long skinny quilt with the net covering. Various sequins and fibers are sprinkled on the quilt top, covered with net and quilted in place for a fun final effect.
First Coast Quilters Guild is a nonprofit that meets monthly. They welcome anyone interested in the art of quilting. For details on meeting dates and locations, follow them at facebook.com/groups/973027006407317.
The quilters who contributed to this new exhibition are Betty Acree, Rhoda Newton, Kathy Minton, Elaine Halterman, Patrice Mull and Rhonda Woods. Clerk of County Court and Comptroller Tara S. Green is very appreciative of their willingness to share their talent with us and with all those who visit the courthouse.
