One of the most-popular aspects of the Super Bowl are the commercials. And one spot for Walmart called “Famous Visitors” includes Middleburg country/western legend Slim Whitman.
The ad features a montage of movie and comic book characters picking up groceries. Included in the montage are the quacking aliens from “Mars Attacks.” In the movie, the aliens were defeated when their heads exploded as they listened to Whitman’s “Indian Love Call.” Walmart’s commercial ends with the melodic yodeling of another Whitman classic, “I’m Casting My Lasso Towards the Sky.”
Whitman held the record in the United Kingdom for 36 years when his hit, “Rose Marie,” on top of that country’s charts for 11 weeks.
Whitman lived at his estate, Woodpecker Paradise, in Middleburg until he died in 2013. He’s buried at the Middleburg United Methodist Church.
