JACKSONVILLE – There was an epic showdown Monday Night at EverBank Stadium.
There was also an incredible football game between Jacksonville and Kansas City, won 31-28 by the Jaguars on quarterback Trevor Lawrence’s 1-yard touchdown run with 23 seconds remaining.
As part of the lead-up to the Nov. 8 Lynyrd Skynyrd Rocks the Red, White and Blue fundraiser concert to support St. Michael’s Soldiers, a Middleburg-based nonprofit that raises funds and awareness to support the U.S. Armed Forces and their families, Curt Towne and Erik Lundgren played against each other in a Guitar-Hero-like competition during halftime.
The event was also to raise awareness for Johnny Van Zant’s Rockin’ for a Cure auction on Nov. 5 at Porsche Jacksonville to raise money to support groundbreaking research for cavernous malformation, an abnormal collection of thin-walled, dilated blood vessels in the brain or spinal cord. The auction will include appearances and memorabilia from many of his rock-and-roll friends.
Towne said Monday’s game and guitar performance, dubbed "Duval Duels," was a good way to remind Jacksonville about Van Zant’s hometown ties and continued commitment to the community.
“We had a great time, and what I understand, there were about [69,329] close friends there. It was a lot of fun.”
Towne, Lundgren and the Jaguars' mascot, Jaxson de Ville, traded guitar licks, and the fans graded their performances. Officially, Lundgren, a former lead guitarist for the Johnny Van Zant Band, won by 4%.
“I may have finished second, but I beat Jaxson de Ville,” Towne said.
“The crowd was participating and yelling, and they were very, very kind. I heard a lot of chants of both of our names. I enjoyed the moment and made a lot of memories.”
The Curt Towne Band will open for Skynyrd Nov. 8 at Daily’s Place at 8 p.m. (tickets are available at ticketmaster.com). The Jaguars are part of the project and that’s why they asked Towne and Lundgren to appear. The fact that the Jaguars played the Chiefs gave them the biggest stage possible.
