Raiders fall prey to Bolles’ 20-0 fast start

ORANGE PARK - Three turnovers in the first half derailed any chance that Orange Park could keep up with Bolles’ fast break offense, as the host Raiders lost 35-0 in a preseason game on Friday, August 18.

“It is a lack of focus,” said Orange Park head coach Marcus Wimberly. “We do turnover drills in practice every day.”

The Raiders fumbled on three consecutive possessions spanning the end of the first quarter and the start of the second. Quarterback D.J. Moore and the Bolles no-huddle offense converted each one into a touchdown, putting the game out of reach. First, Bulldogs safety Trey Brown pounced on a Dylan Ruiz fumble at the Orange Park 33-yard line. Five plays later, cornerback Donavan Bradley was running stride for stride with Bolles receiver Naeem Burroughs, but Moore dropped the ball perfectly to Burroughs’ outside shoulder, and the sophomore who already enjoys multiple collegiate offers warded off Bradley to make the catch in the end zone for a 20-0 lead.

“We don’t get those types of looks in practice,” said Wimberly. “They [the Orange Park defensive backs] had some ‘Ah-hah moments,’ where you see something on the field and say, ‘That is what Coach was talking about.’”

Taking on Bolles, an FHSAA Class 2 state semifinalist last year, was no easy task, but Wimberly wanted a formidable opponent for the Raiders’ preseason game.

“I like to find out where our holes are so we can fix them,” he said. "If you play cupcakes, you get a false impression.”

Finally, Ryder Fulmer caught a pass from Orange Park quarterback Gabe Taylor but fumbled when hit at the Raider's 44-yard line. After Bolles’ Tyrone Neal converted a fourth and three with a four-yard gain, Grzebin bolted up the middle, broke two tackles and scored. Theo Hardt drilled the extra point to cap the scoring.

The turnovers marred what was mostly a promising showing by the Raiders offense, which gained more first downs in the first half than the Bulldogs did. Taylor completed 12 of 19 passes. Wimberly was pleased with his young sophomore, saying that he did well and just needs more repetitions. Paulk, who had six receptions, and Fulmer, who had four, proved to be capable receivers. And Wimberly liked the hard running he saw from Ruiz, who gained 17 yards on seven carries, and fellow running back Joshua Johnson, who finished with 52 yards on 10 attempts.

“We should be a pretty potent offense if we are locked in,” said Wimberly.
