ORANGE PARK – Twelve hours after a fire destroyed an Orange Park wood fence yard, authorities with the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, Florida Fire Marshall’s office and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives arrested their person of interest, Noah Casey Coffin.
They said the 24-year-old was responsible for an early-morning fire Thursday at R Champ Fencing, a yard where wooden panels for fences are built and stored at 185 Blanding Blvd.
Coffin was charged with arson on an occupied structure.
Deputies earlier warned he usually carries a large knife and he had been displaying erratic and unstable behavior.
He was arrested in Jacksonville Thursday.
The owner of the yard said Coffin may have argued with an employee at the business on Wednesday and was ordered to leave. Witnesses said he returned shortly after 5 a.m. Thursday. By 6:13 a.m., the business was quickly engulfed after at least one propane tank exploded.
The fire was fueled by gasoline, and it was started at the front of the business, near a break room where a man was sleeping.
Clay County Fire and Rescue said yard was “a 100-percent loss.”
There were no injuries from the fire.
R Champ Fencing’s primary business is located two blocks away at 316 Blanding Blvd.
Kam Y. Ebrahimi owns Kamy’s Kars next door to the fence yard. He said he often sees transients in the alley and around the yard.
