• Southern rockers Johnny and Donnie Van Zant team up with Bobby Ingram of Molly Hatchet, Curt Towne and two other acts to host the “Help Somebody If You Can” concert at the Thrasher-Horne Center to help the victims of Hurricane Irma.
• Historic St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, which was built in the 17th century, suffers significant water damage from Hurricane Irma – so much Senior Warden Craig Lee needed a kayak inside the structure.
• A 10-year study of the St. Johns River shows levels of nitrogen and phosphorus have declined, but levels of toxic algae blooms have increased.

10 years ago, 2012
• Green Cove Springs city employees to get a 3% cost of living pay raise.
• Despite the threat of a storm, about 75 residents attended the one-mile CROP Walk for Hunger to benefit the Food Pantry of Green Cove Springs and the Clothes Closet and Food Pantry in Orange Park.
• Orange Park Town Councilwoman Marge Hutton is forced to resign after she decides to run for the Board of County Commissioners.

20 years ago, 2002
• Prominent Clay County Judge L. Thomas McAnnally is killed when a tractor rolls on top of him while he was clearing a field on his property.
• Three different homes were either destroyed or suffered significant damage in Clay Hill in a 12-hour span.
• Ella Thoren is crowned Ms. Life Care Center of Orange Park queen.

30 years ago, 1992
• Employees at the Green Cove Springs City Hall are eager for a $40,000 renovation to be completed.
• The Board of County Commissioners approve a 4% cost of living salary adjustment for county employees.
• Tom Rodgers is honored by the BCC as the firefighter of the year, while EMT Dale Ruhnau is honored as the firefighter of the month.


40 years ago, 1982
• The Clay County Fair Association sets a membership meeting to create an organization that eventually could lead to an annual fair.
• The Orange Park Community Theatre has a hit on its hands with “Plaza Suite,” starring Ann Kenyon, Dane Kenyon, Al Varner, Allison Stinson and Bill Condon.
• Green Cove Springs city employees vote 34-14 to not be represented by a union.
