FLEMING ISLAND – There was a distinct sound of golf balls clacking, the aroma of cigar smoke and laughter during Tuesday night’s Special Olympics golf tournament at the Top of the Tee at the Fleming Island Golf Club. Golfers got to play a Toptracer simulated round of the iconic Pinehurst No. 2 – all while supporting the county’s Special Olympics team. Money earned at the fundraiser will support the cost of year-round training, competition expenses, uniforms, equipment, transportation and athlete wellness programs at no cost to athletes and their families. There also was a long drive competition, as well as a silent auction for sports memorabilia like signed helmets from Danny Wuerffel, Tim Tebow, Trevor Lawrence and Travis Hunter. Included in the auction were signed framed photos by Steve Spurrier and Vince Dooley, as well a variety of Florida-Georgia gift boxes. The tournament precedes Tip-A-Cop at Longhorn Steakhouse on Fleming Island from Oct. 27-29. To donate to Special Olympics, contact Clay County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Zach Cox at (904) 445-0521.
