Lieutenant Commander Alfred T. Shiller, age 94, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2025, in Green Cove Springs, Florida. Al, as his friends and family knew him was born in Houston Texas on August 17, 1930. He was a devoted husband and father. He is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Rita, his son Glenn and daughter Linda, and three grandchildren, Thomas III, Autumn, and Haley, and 7 great grandchildren.
Lieutenant Commander Shiller enlisted in the United Sates Navy on June 18, 1948. In 1959 he completed Chief’s Academy and then went on to Officer Candidate school and was Commissioned as an officer with the rank of ensign. He then completed Arresting Gear school in 1962 and was assigned to the USS Saratoga as the Arresting Gear officer based out of Mayport, Florida. LCDR Shiller was stationed at NAS Lemore, California in September 1970 as Maintenance Officer for Attack Squadron VA 212 attached to the USS Hancock during the Vietnam War. LCDR Shiller then retired from the United States Navy with an Honorable Discharge in 1973.
Lieutenant Commander Alfred T. Shiller was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Armed Forces Exped. Medal (Cuba), Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.
Al loved to travel and work with his hands. He carved beautiful wood figures and murals by hand and was an avid “Rockhound” who made wonderful jewelry with the rocks and gems that he found or acquired. Al built the house that he and Rita have lived in since 1974 with his bare hands, a beautiful “A Frame “house on Black Creek in Middleburg, Florida. Al and Rita traveled all over the US in their RV and were always on the go. Al was also a 32-degree Mason and loved the friendship and charity work that the Masons are known for.
Lieutenant Commander Alfred T. Shiller was laid to rest at the US National Cemetery in Jacksonville, Florida on 20 June at 10:30 am
